Sommerville Gets First Win South of the Border

Saint John, NB, Canada 2/10/10- Florida in February is the place to be for racing, no matter what
type of racing you do. Florida Speedweeks at New Smyrna Speedway is an experience that most
racers try at least once in their careers and in 2010 Lonnie Sommerville and his A.E. McKay
Builders/Pub’s Drive Thru Bottle Exchange race team thought they would see what the hype is all
about. After Monday night’s win in the super late model division they are sure glad they did.
After rain washed out the first day of competition, Sommerville scored a solid fifth place finish in
his first ever Speedweeks appearance. Day three of the nine day grind of stock car racing,
Sommerville timed in sixth quickest and started second for the thirty lap feature due to the
random inversion. The Canadian racer made his country proud leading the first three laps before
a loose racecar relegated him to a sixth place finish at the line. However, the drama and
excitement was just beginning. At the conclusion of the race, infamous tech man Ricky Brooks
deemed the top five finishers too soft according to New Smyrna Speedway’s tire durometer rule,
which disqualified the top five finishers of the feature. Soon after, Sommerville’s tires were
checked as well and after passing the check, Lonnie was given his first career win south of the
border.
“They came down and wanted to check the tires,” said Sommerville. “We figured we picked up a
spot or something; we didn’t know. They checked our tires and told us we won the race. I really
didn’t want to pass guys that way, but we’ll take them anyway we can get them. We’ve had a bit of
a struggle finding the handle, we we’re a little tight last night and a little free tonight, but we feel
like we’ll have a good handle on our car now for Wednesday night. Even though we won like we
did, it is pretty special for me because it’s my first win down in the states and that’s been a goal of
mine since we started traveling south. It also means a lot for the racing community as a whole
back in Canada, because it’s been some time since there’s been a Canadian that’s won down
here in Speedweeks and now I can say I’ve done so.”
The win puts Sommerville in a tie for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing points lead in
the Super Late Model division with Florida’s BJ McLeod heading into Wednesday night’s action at
New Smyrna Speedway.
