By ASA Late Model Series Rougemont, North Carolina (08/12/2007): The fifth race of the 2007 Season in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts is now complete. The Orange County (NC) Speedway in Rougemont, North Carolina was the site for the running of the Orange County 125 Presented by FLF Racecars.
The fast 0.375 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval in the Tar Heel State saw a very exciting extended distance 125-lap Feature on a very hot and humid evening and after all was said and done, Boothbay, Maine driver, Corey Williams made a lasting first impression as he started on the pole in his David Stremme Racing/Chevrolet Monte Carlo and withstood several challenges from a variety of drivers to lead all 125 laps to score his first career ASALMS Feature win.
Williams, who was making his ASALMS debut held off a determined, Sean Murphy, who was looking for some redemption after losing the win at the Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway in an ASALMS Challenge Division race after breaking a right front wheel. Murphy settled for second after Williams pulled away from him and rest of the field.
Two drivers making their ASALMS debuts at the Orange County (NC) Speedway, Corey Williams, the winner of the last three Pro All-Stars Series (P.A.S.S.) Southern Series Features, and Taylor Satterfield, a regular in the Georgia Asphalt Series (G.A.S.) Led the 26-car field to chief starter, Joey Aycock’s green flag to begin the extended distance feature.
Right off the bat, a complete restart was in order as 19-year-old Travis Cope looped his mount coming out of Turn Four, then moments later, 14-year-old Tyler Townsend was turned around right at the start/finish line. Both spins forced a complete restart.
As the green flew again, Williams beat out Satterfield to the first corner to take the early lead as the rest of field settled in. After falling back a bit on the start, inside second row starter, Sean Murphy began his charge back to the front while ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Jeff Choquette charged up fast from his seventh starting spot and soon was in second spot behind Williams.
The second of nine cautions flew on Lap 21 when the lone North Carolina representative in the field, Four Oaks veteran, Greg Stewart tagged the Turn Two wall and was forced to call it a night. One lap later, 16-year-old Brian Blum brought out the caution when he suddenly stopped in the middle of the backstretch forcing cars to scatter to avoid hitting the parked car. Blum pitted and later returned, but dropped out late in the race.
As the drivers took the green to restart the event, ASALMS Southern Division Overall and Rookie Points Leader heading into the weekend, Sean Bass got sideways and slapped the front stretch wall right at the flag stand. The Orlando, Florida driver overcorrected his Dodge Charger and veered head on into the Turn One wall!
Bass was ok, but done for the evening and as a result, lost his points leads heading into the South’s next two events in Mid-September during the Georgia Doubleheader weekend! More trouble ensued for drivers running in the Top Five in the ASALMS Southern Division Points Standings 14 laps later, and as a result, changed the face of the entire points battles!
18-year-old David Wilson’s throttle stuck coming out of Turn Four and he got into the back end of Chris Fontaine, who spun. This triggered a massive Eight-Car pile- up in Turn Four and knocked out several top contenders! Fontaine, who was fourth in points coming into the night was done while second in points, Brandon Johnson was also involved and after making repairs to his machine, he came back out but several laps off the pace.
As the field returned to green flag racing, Corey Williams had been maintaining the lead throughout the mayhem of the slew of cautions as he now had to deal with Sean Murphy, who got back by Jeff Choquette for second position. Murphy looked high and low trying to figure out a way around the Boothbay, Maine driver, who was making his ASALMS debut, while Murphy was seeking a bit of redemption after his incident the week before at Bristol!
The laps continued to click off asa Murphy threw every trick in his arsenal at Williams, who was up to the challenge throughout the 125-lap Feature. The last caution flew on Lap 74 setting up a 51 lap green flag finish when David Wilson, after coming back out with a damaged car after the Lap 36 incident, slammed the Turn One wall and was done for the night.
The last 51 laps saw Williams slowly but surely pull away from Murphy, Choquette and the rest of the field. The 21-year-old built up a three second lead at one point and would go on to lead al 125 laps to score his first career ASALMS Feature win in his ASALMS debut and his debut driving for David Stremme Racing!
Murphy settled for second while new ASALMS Southern Division Overall and Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Jeff Choquette picked up his third straight Top Five finish with a solid third place showing and now takes over the points leads heading into the Georgia Doubleheader weekend on September 14-15, 2007.
Beau Slocumb and Tommy King from 21st, rounded out the Top Five while Dillon Oliver earned the Hard-Charger of the Race Award with his 23rd to Sixth place run. Wes Burton, Jeremy Gerstner, Zach Taylor, and Jimmy Lang completed the Top 10 in a caution filled event that saw three of the top five in the South points heading into the weekend, all knocked out of the event in various accidents.
Earlier in the afternoon in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, Choquette won his first career ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award as the Loxahatchee, Florida driver in his C-C Loader Service/Ford Fusion turned a 14.234 which measures out to 94.843 MPH. The ASALMS Southern Division Track Record was set back on August 19, 2006 when Josh Hamner went a 14.009 around the 0.375 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval.
The next two events for the ASALMS Southern Division will see the South contingent run two races in two nights in the great state of Georgia, which will prove to be pivotal in the chase for both the 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Champion and Rookie of the Year titles.
