Early entries starting to come in for SpeedFest 2008 and the Crate Late Model Challenge 100. By: Matt Prieur-ASA Late Model Series

(USA International Speedway) Lexington, Michigan (12/27/2007): As the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts family prepares for the 2007 ASALMS Awards Banquet and Weekend of Champions on Friday and Saturday January 18-19, 2008; Several ASALMS Teams will immediately get in gear to kick off their respective 2008 racing seasons just a week later.
The ASALMS is a part of SpeedFest 2008 at the USA (FL) International Speedway in Lakeland, Florida on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 24- 25-26, 2008. The "Non-Points" Crate Late Model Challenge 100 will crown the first winner of the 2008 campaign in “America’s Premiere Short Track Series”.
The "Non-Points" 100-lap Feature, to be run on Saturday January 26, 2008 will be conducted just one weekend after the 2007 ASALMS Awards Banquet and Weekend of Champions at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Crate Late Model Challenge 100 / SpeedFest 2008 Entry Form is Available and will be $100.00 to enter and will be due at the USA International Speedway Offices in Lakeland, Florida by Friday January 11, 2008. Otherwise it's $150.00 to enter.

The early entries are starting to come in for the special 100-lap “Non-Points” race as a slew of ASALMS Southern Division teams headline the early entry list. But it’s a former winner of the Super Late Models portion of the SpeedFest weekend that all ASALMS teams will be gunning for in Lakeland, Florida.
Wheaton, Illinois veteran, Eddie Hoffman, the defending race winner of SpeedFest, has filed an entry for both the ASALMS portion as well as the Super Late Models segment. The 47-year-old Prairie State veteran tied for the most Feature Wins of the 2007 season in the ASALMS with Four (4) Victories and hopes to kick off the 2008 campaign the same way he did in 2007; With a Feature Win on the 0.750 Mile Progressively Banked Paved Oval.
NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor, David Stremme has also filed an entry for both portions of the SpeedFest 2008 Weekend! The South Bend, Indiana driver, currently searching for a ride for the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Season, looks to kick off his 2008 season the right way as well with at least One Feature Win in the Sunshine State.
Richard Johns, a part-time competitor in the NASCAR Busch Series (Now NASCAR Nationwide Series) in 2007 and now a contender in the 2008 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season for Wyler Racing has filed an entry as well.
The Lawrenceville, Georgia pilot has made select appearances over the past Two seasons in the ASALMS and did pick up One Win in the GM Performance Parts Shootout at the Music City (TN) Motorplex on March 31, 2007. Johns’ teammate for the weekend will be ASALMS Southern Division driver, Wes Burton, who finished 23rd in the final 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Drivers Points Standings.
Three-Time ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Chris Fontaine has also entered the Crate Late Model Challenge 100. The hometown driver from Lakeland, Florida finished Fifth in the Final 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Points Standings and looks to pick up his first career ASALMS Feature Win in front of his hometown fans.
St. Petersburg, Florida driver, Rob Partelo, the winner of the 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Season Opener; The Camp Boggy Creek 100 Presented by Pennzoil at the Bronson (FL) Motor Speedway in Bronson, Florida on March 17, 2007 is entered as well as he and Fontaine lead a strong contingent of Florida based drivers into SpeedFest 2008.
In addition to Fontaine and Partelo and also representing the Sunshine State includes 14-year-old Drew Brannon, who calls Miami, Florida home and 18- year-old Patrick Staropoli. Both made select appearances in 2007 and plan on running for the 2008 Rookie of the Year title in the ASALMS Southern Division.
Another Rookie, 13-year-old Logan Ruffin, a Rookie of the Year title contender in both the ASALMS Challenge and Southern Divisions in 2008, has filed an entry as well in preparation for a busy 2008 season for the Brentwood, Tennessee teenager who will be steering a Total Performance Driver Development entry.
One driver who perhaps looks to win the award for farthest traveler, at least in the ASALMS portion of the weekend is Center Conway, New Hampshire driver, D.J. Shaw. The 17-year-old son of former NASCAR Grand National East Division Champion, Dale Shaw, will make his ASALMS debut during SpeedFest 2008 Weekend in Florida.
The CRA Super Series and the FASCAR Florida Sunbelt Series serve as head- liners for SpeedFest 2008 at the fast 0.750 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval. The ASALMS portion of the weekend will be a “Non-Points” special event for ALL Template Bodied / Crate Engine machines from all over North America.
SpeedFest officials will oversee the entire event with technical support from ASA Late Model Series Technical Officials and Staff. The entire weekend will be under the direction of CRA Super Series Promoters, Glenn Luckett and R. J. Scott as well as FASCAR’s Don Nerone. All three will be co-promoting the entire weekend with the speedway.
ASALMS Rules Will Apply and the Goodyear 2602 Tires Must Be Purchased and Impounded at the Track. ASALMS Licenses are NOT Required for this event. All Cars #'s must carry an “N” or “S” Designation. In the three previous SpeedFests’ held with the popular template bodied Super Late Models, two of those have been won by ASA Late Model Series competitors. In January of this past season; Wheaton, Illinois veteran, Eddie Hoffman started off his 2007 campaign right by taking the checkered flag in the 200-lap Feature.
In the inaugural event in 2005, Eau Claire, Wisconsin veteran, Charlie Menard was the winner over a very strong field. Sandwiched between the two veterans’ victories, Florida ace, Mike Fritts took home the victory in the 2006 version of SpeedFest. This will be the first ever appearance for the ASALMS at the Lakeland, Florida speed plant.
